The buzz is “Registering Marriage is
Compulsory. The Supreme Court passed this direction to the Center as well as
State governments. It’s very good news to Indian women on the eve of
International Women’s day!
This is has come when several cases have come to light where the husband’s
refuses to pay maintenance stating that they are not married due to
non-availability of legal documental proof.
Hence the official record of marriages will be of immense value as the
registrations of births and deaths. Such a measure will definitely help the
women in gender-biased judgment. It also curbs the violation of laws in the
areas of divorce, right of children and dowry protection. It also helps the
women from the hassles of spouse visa and passport, as you may be anxious to
move-in with your hubby.
Andhra Pradesh State has enacted the law in 2002, that marriage registration is
compulsory. Hence the newly-weds rushes to marriage registrar office after their
marriage. An affective law, I must say. Imagine the couple queuing in front of
their heavy attire in front of the registrar!
Now you know the good news. Why not spread it yourself to the lesser-known
women, who might be un-educated or unaware of this ruling?
